Thought Bite: Most of Us Still Have Emotional Conflicts

Originally posted in 2018, this is a message I felt bears repeating.

Swami Rama tells a story that has relevance for all of us:

I was sitting on the banks of the Ganges reading the Gita, one of the great texts that imparts knowledge, when a swami came along and asked, “What are you doing?”

I replied that I was reading the Gita. He said, “Then you must still be a fool!”

I was so shocked at what he had just said that I just stared at him. Then I asked him to explain himself, and he replied, “The Gita is for those who still have conflicts. Arjuna had a conflict, and Krishna helped him to resolve that conflict. I don’t have any conflicts so I no longer need to study the Gita.”

I asked, “Are you sure you are not just boasting?”

“What do you mean? I am not boasting about anything. If you are not ignorant or in conflict, then why do you need to search for knowledge? If you are already full of knowledge, you don’t require any more. Knowledge is eternal, Self existent and here and now.” (Sadhana, The Path to Enlightenment, Pp. 58-59).

I’m definitely in the category of people needing to read the Gita to learn to resolve all conflicts. How about you?
