Thought Bite: Movement and Stillness

Originally posted in 2016, this is a message I felt bears repeating.

Life is full of activity. If I want to eat, to recreate, to be with friends, I have to move.

Even when my body is stationary, movement is happening—inside: the blood is flowing, the heart is beating, the lungs are expanding and contracting, and on and on. Life is movement. 

But there is another realm of life where success comes from not moving: Meditation.

In meditation, we seek experience of the Center of Consciousness. But this experience is blocked by the agitation and constant movement of the mind. Because the mind and body are intimately connected, if the body is moving, the mind moves too. So, to meditate, we still the body as a first step to stilling the mind.

Then we smooth the breath and seek to concentrate the mind onto a single object. With practice, and Grace, the mind becomes more still. As Swami Rama said, "Meditation is a journey without movement."(Sadhana, The Essence of Spiritual Life, Pp. 85.)
