A message originally posted in 2016 that I felt bears repeating.
In his book, Sadhana, The Path To Enlightenment, Swami Rama says "The difference between a great man and one who is not great is this: A great man does everything selflessly for others; a small, petty man, who lives like a creature in this world, does all things for himself."
This fits with my experience of my beloved teacher, Swami Veda Bharati.
He spent his every waking moment, and, no doubt, most of his moments when he was resting, in the service of others. Thousands of people loved him and thought of him as great. Certainly I did. Interestingly, he was incredibly happy.
Many of us try to hold on to our happiness by doing our work for ourselves not realizing that it is in serving others that we find happiness.
