Monday was the 4th of July in the USA, Independence Day. It is the day that America celebrates its independence from the British Empire.
This got me thinking.
Certainly, the right for America to have its own government make its laws is worth celebrating, and, I wondered, "is there is an even greater independence that we can all strive for?"
I believe there is.
This greater independence is to be independent of the false identifications, habits, and emotional patterns that rule our lives. It also means being independent of the cycles of pain and pleasure, of winning and losing, and of birth and death.
This greater independence is often called "enlightenment," and striving for enlightenment is what Yoga is all about.
