Thought Bite: The Chattering Mind

Many, perhaps most people are addicted to their chattering mind. Their mind is thinking, analyzing, imagining, remembering, working all the time. Smartphones, computers and TV aggravate this by presenting more to think about, more to look at. Our minds never stop except in sleep.

It feels so normal to be immersed in the mind's activity that we don't imagine that it could be otherwise.

Yet it can be otherwise.

A silent mind is a pleasure. Unlike other pleasures, which are based on sensory excitement, the pleasure of a silent mind is quiet and deeply nurturing. This is why silence is called "golden." This is why we enjoy sleeping, the one time each day our mind stops chattering (when not dreaming). But in sleep, we are not conscious, so we don't fully experience the joy of a quiet mind.

Wouldn't it be great to experience a completely silent mind while awake and aware?

You can. This is where meditation comes in. The goal of meditation is a quiet, yet fully conscious mind.

Like any skill, it takes time to learn how to meditate so you are able to experience a still mind. And it's worth the trouble. If you would like to learn meditation, contact me. I'll be happy to get you started.
